Volkswagen Touareg V6 3.0 TDI, test (II)
We tested the Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI with 245 hp engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission which is part of the standard equipment. Might not be surprised by the power of its engine per se, but if you consider the maximum torque of 550 Nm from 2,000 laps, you will understand that it has more than enough for a vehicle of this size power. The renovated 3.0 TDI V6 was tuned a few months ago, winning 5 hp more, taken from a six cylinder block with a vee displacement of 2,967 cm3. issues 189 g / km of CO2 and, as mentioned, its consumption is only 7.2 l / 100 km.
You can make 0-100 in 7.8 seconds, reaching sixth place a top speed of 218 km / h. The seventh and eighth ratio automatic transmission aim to reduce the speed, the noise level and fuel consumption ... thanks to that and to the BlueMotion technology a very low power consumption is obtained.
Among the strengths of the BlueMotion package highlights System Start / Stop -fast and gently holding the engine at stoplights, and the energy recovery system that recharges the batteries during braking phases and retention. In addition, it also acts by turning off the water pump in the startup phase, so that cold engine warms up much faster, thus saving fuel.
Besides the 3.0 TDI V6 engine there are four alternatives two petrol engines and two diesel: V6 TDI 204 hp (54,940 euros), V8 TDI 340 hp (81,780 euros), V6 FSI 280 hp (62,070 euros) and V6 TSI Hybrid 380 hp (84,730 euros). Along with the engine tested in this report, is also interesting the V6 TDI 204 hp, with 40 hp less, it delivers power should not embarrass the driver, except in some isolated occasion. Consumption is identical to the 240 hp engine but its starting price is 5,000 euros less, nearly one million of the old pesetas, so it could be a very interesting option for many pockets.
On the other side of the scale is the mechanical V8 TDI 340 hp, only suitable for those wishing to fly on the motorway. It is a more expensive vehicle for just over 20,000 euros but, in exchange, the standard equipment is much more complete. Another drawback is the 2 liters of combined cycle fuel consumption which, ultimately, may pose more of a headache for some. Mechanical less gasoline will be sold, and the hybrid option is expensive but it will have its fans.
My partner Sergio could test this engine in the Porsche Cayenne and said consumption in town which could dispararse- are quite content. "Being a hybrid, the city also is a huge fuel costs, you can actually save a lot of heavy traffic", as he himself pointed out (you can read his impressions here).
It has a air suspension (3,365 euros) which raises the vehicle to pass without difficulty through the most complicated areas cross country ... and also lowers the ride height to the ground at speeds above 70 km / h to avoid sways and improve comfort dual carriageway. There is even a third position, which further reduces the height to access low-floor garages.
The new Touareg comes with the system 4MOTION via Torsen, It is offering a program of off-road driving with assistant descents and up to 31 degrees of climbing ability. However our unit incorporating the optional package 4XMOTION, to make it a real all-rounder, ideal for people looking for very camperas skills. The system includes 4XMOTION reducing, 15mm over ground clearance and a center differential with sheets, obtaining a lifting capacity of 45, 14 degrees more than the Touareg 4MOTION.
To operate the system there is a rotating wheel with the gearshift called "Terrain Tech" with 5 driving programs. The first (on-road) is for highway, a second to forest trails (off-road), the third mode is reductive and two ways to block the center and rear differentials.
Thanks to "Terrain Tech" system and air suspension which allows to increase the distance from the floor the Touareg offers an excellent fording depth of 580 millimeters ... but honestly, I am not of those who buy a vehicle that could be considered premium - with a price of around 60,000 euros - to use very thoroughly field ...
Series, the Touareg has the "Area-view" system, composed of four cameras which generate an image as if we see the car from above, bird's eye view. This system is very useful to see small obstacles when maneuvering in town and, in general, any element that we have no vision and that could collide.
Intelligent lighting system, a future technology ...
The option that caught my attention is the function of light distribution depending on traffic, also known as "Dynamic Light Assist" (455 euros) installed in combination with Bi-Xenon headlamps (2,035 euros). This system allowed to carry permanently activated the beam, but without dazzling other vehicles. He uses an integrated behind the windscreen and a special filter placed between the reflector and the lens xenon, which makes each headlamp is capable of guiding the light beam independently camera.
In this way it aims to make, the higher the speed, the larger the field of view. So long modules headlights are continuously active and filter mask allows light source areas where other vehicles can dazzling.
For example, if you drive a car in front of us, the system dampens lighting until a few meters before the rear of the vehicle, while the rest of the track is still illuminating beam. Furthermore, two-way roads is able to reduce the light directed to the vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.
