Google Good For Newspapers, Newspapers Will Continue to Fold

By Michael Klurfeld on April 7, 2009

There’s an interesting story today about how Google actually sends billions of hits over to the websites of various newspapers, which shows how new technology does not necessarily spell doom for old industries. Still, the internet is causing and will continue to cause consolidation in the news industry, which meansn newspapers will continue to close their doors.

The internet in effect is a convenient marketplace that allows for national and global economies to be the ones with which consumers interact directly. Thus companies that depend on people within specific enclaves are more likely to fold than others. That said, people are going to continue to want local news; if you live in Omaha, Nebraska, you will want to know about events effecting you in Omaha. So there is room for one or two niche outlets per locality to report on stories effecting people within those localities. But the days in which companies could make their bread reporting on the same stories in different locations are fast coming to a close.
