The End Of Web 1.0

By Alex Wilhelm on April 1, 2009

Once almighty Silicon Graphics is now both bankrupt and gone. In a surprisingly unfunny story on April 1st, SGI announced that it was no more, being purchased fora a paltry 25 million in cash by Rackable. SIG, a company that  was worth half of Mexico in a previous age is now gone, humiliated. this announcement is unsurprising. I recall reading an annual report from the company, and after reviewing their financials I was terrified.

I had lost track of the company since them, but seeing that they have folded, nothing improved. This is in a way the final condemnation of the Web 1.0 methods of business. Huge overhead and the like. Not that Web 2.0 manged to cut the fat much, but we can still learn from CGI. Sad to see them go, but I doubt there are many tears, there is just too much to do.
