The iPhone Is No Business Tool

By Alex Wilhelm on April 6, 2009

I am ashamed to say this now, but before the iPhone actually came out, I thought it was going to be a business companion. It has devolved into a pathetic way for me to avoid calls, check Twitter,  and send 7 word emails. Not what I had in mind. I had envisioned a full laptop in the palm of my hand, how naive I was. Anyway, lets take a look at what I cant do. Seems sometimes to outweigh what I can.

I blog, as you can tell. I would like to blog, and then create a short URL for the post, and then stick that into my Twitter stream to let my 4,500 followers know that I have a new post up. After writing a post, I can do all of that in about 13 seconds. Then I turn on real time analytics and see who decided to come by and take a look. Lets break it down. I can write a post on the Wordpress app. Its clumsy to do, but possible. I can publish from there. Ok. Now, to create the tiny URL I have to go to the page in the Safari browser (clunky) and then memorize the URL. Then over to Cli.gs where I have to transplant the URL from memory and generate a new link. Then I have to memorize that and then open Tweetie after exiting Safari. If  I for get I have to repeat that. Then in Tweetie I can type in the link, and then I get to try and recall the title of the post. Finally, after all the hooplah, I close Tweetie and cycle back and forth between it and Clicky Spy in Safari to get reactions.

After all that I could have pulled out my laptop and written three posts! The iPhone is a functional toy with moderate email capabilities (the built in email app is a joke, no search?) and a few good apps. Sadly, and I hate to say this, it is still the best phone out there. When are we going to get something useful?
