Prism 1.0 Pushes Some Significant Updates – Still Won’t Be Used

By Holden Page on May 9, 2009

Prismlogo400Prism, the Mozilla platform that lets you open specific web applications in their own dedicated window has pushed out updates that will definitely improve the end users experience. Out of these updates the most significant is allowing users to clear private data in each of the windows and the ability to change the font within the window. Other features included are:

1. Web Applications Updates (Mac and Windows)

2. Tray Icon Support (Mac and Windows)

While this is all fine and dandy I can’t help but think how no one is going to use this. As a Chrome user this support is completely built in and while it is not quite as powerful as the current implementation of Prism it does its job quite well. As a very heavy Firefox user previous to this I was very aware of Prism but simply never got the gumption to install the plug-in, it simply wasn’t a feature that demanded my attention unless in Chrome’s case, it was already there.

I also have qualms with the pixelated logo’s, and to be fair this is a problem with Chrome also but is still more prominent in Prism. While I am definitely not the most savviest design oriented person in the world I do not want an ugly logo like that sitting on my desktop. It is very much an “ugly duckling” scenario and has even prevented me from even adding these web applications to my desktop.

If Firefox is serious about this feature then they better start thinking about at least integrating it into their browser that currently has 24% market share, a significant reach they are not leveraging. If a tech person such as myself won’t even install it do you actually think the average joe would? Take a cue from Chrome on this one Firefox team and simply install it for us, don’t let Chrome continue to beat you on this front.
