The entire Internet is a buzz with the secret convention of newspaper executives that are gathering to decide whether online content should remain free. According to James Warren at The Atlantic, the newspaper executives have met today to decide on how to implement a pay structure for online newspapers.
For the most part, everyone agrees that authors who write good content should be able to make money off that content. Unfortunately, the users of the Internet have long been accustomed to getting content for free, which make authors, and in this case newspapers, unable to get money for their valuable content. While some companies have tried to build a way for content providers to make money, none have really caught on, and this makes it even more difficult for new blogs or news sites to make money.
So what does this mean for the future of content? Nothing right now. If newspapers decide to charge for some of their content however, it could mean that we start to see a shift of websites want sections of their content to be premium as well.
