The iPhone 3GS is in our opinion, a complete rip. Honestly think about it for a moment, what is so new that is being brought to the iPhone 3GS? Some upgrades in hardware and a few apps tossed in. Well that is great, but not enough to get me up and running to the Apple Store. Apple has an amazing history of squeezing every drop of greatness out of their products. Hell, Apple made copy and paste seem like it was revolutionary to have on a phone. So it is very odd when Apple doesn’t boast about a very vital aspect of it’s product, the increased speed of Safari with iPhone 3.0.
According to a study conducted by mobile tech platform Medialets, the original iPhone 3G with OS 3.0 installed is nearly 3 times faster than the OS version previous. With the iPhone 3GS the advantages of the 3.0 OS adds three times more speed boost than the iPhone 3G with OS 3.0. This is all due to Safari mobiles now Javascript engine. While Apple has stated that Safari is faster, no one exactly knew that it was to this extent.
This is a strike, in my opinion, directly at Google Chrome. The mobile web will take over eventually and to date the Android browser is considerably slower than Safari, putting Chrome at a loss. But, then again, you could theoretically put Chrome on any mobile device and Safari is locked down to the iPhone. This automatically restricts Safari by the number of iPhones sold, it may be the dominant browser right now, but Chrome mobile will eventually be more diverse, even if it is slower.
As for mobile web developers, this is a definite plus for them. There is no denying the fact that speed is better for everyone and this will increase the performance and hopefully the stability of Safari web applications. This will also please the developers of Gmail mobile who are adding app like functionality to the mobile site, an increased speed boost makes everyone look better.
