Facebook Vanity URLs are Upon Us.

By Chacha on June 17, 2009

With the recent launch of Facebook vanity URLs, you can now claim a http://facebook.com/user address to link directly to your Facebook profile. Like current social networks, you can hook your profile up with a custom address that allows you to give the world your facebook profile without including all the annoying numbers of your Facebook User ID.

Some people have found this to be a very humurous process as some news sites have already named the funniest profile addresses created. Techcrunch reported that someone grabbed http://facebook.com/default.aspx, which would be the home page of the site if it was written in ASP. Mashable also did a peice on a few more interesting names that users have thought of.

Obviously the feature is very popular among users, but no one knew just how popular untill Mashable published another article reporting that Facebook had registered almost 3 million usernames in about 2 hours. According to Mashable, in the first 3 minutes 200,000 usernames were registered, and the registrations per second held strong at an upward of 500 usernames per second for the next 15 minutes. Then in the next 2 hours, users registered 2.5 million names, which is an average of around 350+ usernames per second.

So with all this commotion, what did you get for your vanity address? Feel free to share it in the comments, or share with us some of the funny ones you have found.

  1. Wow, I had no idea about that. Crazyness. I wonder whether they’re actually going to get out of control for names, or if they’ll be regulated. Also, does this cost money to get that vanity URL? Sounds like it would be a great way to be obnoxious on facebook.
