Google Not Taking Bing! Lying Down

By Holden Page on June 18, 2009

2009-06-18_122854Well, at least we know Google isn’t being stupid about Bing! the only serious contendor as of late in the game of search.  Reports have surfaced that Sergey Brin has taken it upon himself to figure out what makes Bing! equal, if not better, than Google itself. But surely Google is not “running scared” from Bing! and a testament to that has been shown.

Thanks to Search Engine Land, Google is now showing on their homepage a link called “discovering the web” and proceeds to say explore the world of Google Search. Clicking on this link will bring you to the multitude of search products Google has to offer as well as a video demonstrating each of these search products. Google isn’t leaving it up to chance  and is leveraging social media to spread the word.

Explore Google Search

In the right bar you can see that Google has links to social services such as Twitter, Digg, Myspace, Orkut and Facebook.com asking people to spread the word. This is fairly interesting to me per se because I have never seen Google prominently display social media as a way to spread the word about their products.

It is interesting to see that Google is taking a search competitor seriously, especially because they have never had to. Currently I give them a thumbs up for what they are currently doing, but it soon might not be enough. According to the latest reports from Techcrunch, Bing search share has grown to 12%, while not a serious number, definitely something to be a little bit wary of. Maybe it is time for Google to crawl out of their quiet shell and start advertising a bit more prominently. What do you think Google should do? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

  1. the ONLY reason bing is hitting numbers is the ie8 roll which attempts at every corner of user install to force bing/live as the default search product. It’s the browser as trojan that killed netscape…i doubt it will kill google but who would have thought it would knock Netscape of the face of the web.
