Learning From Zune – Sharing Apps on Android and iPhone

By Michael Klurfeld on June 3, 2009

iphone_light_beam-276x300So Zune has this nifty social feature where you can “squirt” a song from one Zune to another so that your friends can listen to the music you like. Poor choice of names aside, the big problem with the success of squirting was that the Zune never took off, so if you had a Zune, you’d be lost amidst the crowd of iPods. But there are certainly a lot of iPhones and Android phones on the market, as there are a ton of applications. Google and Apple seem to be considering adding a sharing feature for apps to their respective new firmwares. Interestingly, the ability to do this already exists in the 3.0 iPhone firmware; it just requires Apple’s enabling it (good news for jailbreakers whichever way Apple goes).

Enabling app sharing would be a brilliant marketing decision for developers as well as Gapple. If you go to the Android Market Place and see an interesting looking game, you’re not always willing to put down the dough. But if your friend says “Hey, Possum Chef 9 is a great game,” and you get the same impression after sharing it, you’re going to go out and buy that game. Kaching.
