Cell phone companies operating in Europe have decided to consolidate the overly complicated world of mobile phone chargers. Big name companies across the pond, such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson, have announced that they will be pushing for a universal standard for charging devices, and that we can expect to see universal chargers as early as next year. The best part? The standard will be micro-USB, which means every new handset will be able to both draw power and sync data through the same port on the phone.
This is great news because it’s really annoying for the consumer for there to be one charger per type of phone. Not only does it mean that you have to buy a charger every time you buy a handset, but that losing your charger is that much harder to deal with. If you lose your LG charger and no one else who lives near you has an LG phone, you had better hope the retail stores have some chargers in stock.
Perhaps most interesting thing about this news is that Apple is on board with the likes of Motorola and Samsung and the rest. At this point, it would be sort of crazy for Apple to phase out the ol’ iPod USB port unless their plan is to do so very slowly. This news could mean that the iPhone will be rocking a standard micro-USB port in addition to its current power drawing configuration by the time the next model comes out. Or Apple could be on board just to not feel left out.
Regardless of what Apple is doing, this news is very good. It’s something that should have happened a long time ago.
