Let the great shortening wars continue, with the top dog Bit.ly leading the race many other companies have attempted to jump on the shortening bandwagon. Confirmed to be entering the shortening fray via tweet from Garret Camp a few months ago, the much awaited Su.pr has come.
Currently in private beta, Su.pr is definitely a serious contendor to the current leader Bit.ly. One of the highlighting features of Su.pr is of course the standard analytics inclusion. Tracking clicks in real-time, Su.pr provides you with referrals, and if any retweets occurred. This makes it easy for publishers to see how there content is spreading virally. Still, this isn’t really anything new and is becoming standard amongst many shortening services and is surely not enough for the die-hards to move over. Good thing Su.pr has another trick up its sleeve that is to powerful for many publishers to deny.
Since Su.pr is built by Stumbleupon, it would make sense they leverage their massive community, right? Well that is exactly what Su.pr is doing. Every link you shorten via Su.pr is automatically included in the Stumbleupon database of websites and is attached with the infamous Stumbleupon toolbar that made Digg oh so loved. This makes the content a publisher has shortened automatically accessable by nearly 8 million users. Something that, like I said before, is just too hard to pass up. If content that was shortened by a publisher happens to get “stumbled upon” this data is also included with regular hits under “Stumbleupon Organic Traffic.” Besides all of this though, Su.pr has an array of features that are also worth mentioning.
1. Automatic Posting to Twitter and Facebook
Using OAuth for Twitter and Facebook connect a publisher can automatically post a shortened Su.pr link to both platforms without leaving the Su.pr homepage just by clicking the green button post.
2. Scheduled Posts
We here at Techgeist schedule our posts at times, but having to remember to Tweet out those posts can be a hassle at times. Therefore this feature is a wonderful inclusion to the already fascinating set of tools Su.pr offers.
3. Suggested Posting Times

When is the best time for tweeting/facebooking posts? Well Su.pr will let a publisher know. Taking data from a publishers own shortened links, Su.pr will tell a publisher conveniently in the sidebar when they should Tweet out a post.
4. Your Own Shortener
In the up and coming future, Su.pr will allow you to create SEO friendly shorteners based off of the publishers own site while leveraging the Su.pr services at the same time. A definite plus for anyone who wants to keep everything to themselves (sorta).
Final Thought
Su.pr is definitely a pretty awesome shortening service, and could be a very serious contendor to Bit.ly. Publishers will absolutely LOVE that Su.pr leverages the Stumbleupon community as well as the array of other options and data provided. So far, it seems like Su.pr is doing a lot of things right, lets hope they can keep up the pace. Move over Bit.ly, Su.pr just took your place.
