Let’s talk about advertising. According to the ever prescient ZenithOptimedia Group comes a new report calling for a stunningly positive 10.1% growth of online advertising in 2009, over 2008. What does this mean for you? Well, if you own a little site, have a few ads, and want to make a little money, roll over and die. “most of this growth will come from paid search,” says the group. Even more, “in the U.S., we predict search advertising to grow 20.0% in 2009, while traditional display grows 3.0% and classified grows just 1.8%.” Do you own a search engine? No?
Well then it’s too bad to be you. Given that search advertising is a easy to track, pay for results type of service, its growth has constantly been insatiable. Banner advertising has never worked, still struggles, and is still over used. Hell, we use it. Happily, the reports creators know about recent internet developments:
“[Bing is] welcome competition to Google and should spur further innovation in search.”
Aside from this report reporting on overly reported trends that were repeated by reporters until they purportedly became banal, the advertising numbers are depressing for not-Google, or you and me.
