Want To Code A Pre App? Get To It!

By Alex Wilhelm on July 16, 2009

pre code me

The good news is that the Pre architecture has just become much more open. Want to code for the Pre? Well then, just download the SDK right here and get to it. I am not a developer, but the architecture looked relatively simple. I remember that one stated advantage of the Web OS was its simplicity and use of most modern standards. Unlike the iPhone store, and its Objective C. I know an inch of C++, but could never parse what my developers would create.

This should bring more than a fistful of applications to the fledgling Pre. The Pre is still so new, and we still have such sparse data as to how it is selling, that developers will need to be encouraged into developing for the platform. My advice for Palm is to headhunt developers, and offer them status in the Pre App store if they port over their most popular iPhone or Android applications. Why not? The Pre has space to allow for promotion, and bringing in the best applications from other platforms is a simple way to get top tier work, and to avoid paying for crap (a constant iPhone App store problem that I have).

Whatever happens in the next few months, the openness that we are now seeing from the Pre is a breath of fresh air. Especially after dealing with the App store gestapo. I think that they have a random App approval that goes something like this:

if developer_name != “Kevin Rose”

then run fuckoff()

Pardon my code, that is not an actual language, but you get my point.
