Seems like Michael Arrington’s baby, the CrunchPad, will be touched all over by consumers soon enough. According to Singapore Straits Times and blogged by Dchieng, the CrunchPad will be available for purchase in November with a few other goody specs to boot. The list is below:
dimensions: 12.77 x 7.83 x 0.74″
weight: 1.2kg
screen: 12″
hardware: 1.6ghz atom & 1gb ram
software: webkit browser/operating system, developed by the fusion garage team
peripherals: 1x usb port built-in, for keyboard or mouse
connectivity: wifi & 3g, with option for mobile broadband
price: unconfirmed, estimated $399
While this is all speculative at the moment and some of it is already known, albeit guessed at, the last bit is what is most interesting. If I am looking at this right, it seems as if 3G will be built into the CrunchPad allowing you to access the web from anywhere. While it is rumored that it will be a Kindle-like deal I honestly doubt that. Web surfing takes up A LOT more data than a Kindle e-book does. The CrunchPad is an internet exclusive device and I can’t see our wireless carriers offering 3G for free.
The second bit is price. While this is speculative and none of this is confirmed, $400 dollars is pushing the mark. When Arrington first started out with the idea, the price was suppose to be around $200 and has gone up from there. If the price goes any higher I cannot see consumers jumping on this, especially since the rumored Apple iTablet will be coming soon and be within the $600-$1000 price range. If I know Apple like I do, there price will
For now, lets keep our fingers crossed for the November release date. The CrunchPad sounds promising and if everything is done right, it could possibly be a big success.
