Digg HiJacks Shortened Digg URL’s – Screws Over Publishers

By Holden Page on July 19, 2009

You know all those shortened Digg URL’s you created? Well, they are no longer go where you expect them to.

If you are logged out of Digg and click on a shortened Digg link on Twitter (or any other social service) you are not brought to the content, but you are brought to the dugg article on Digg.com. In another words, every link you have shortened via Digg with the intention of linking to the article, is no longer happening. As if the Digg Bar wasn’t enough for publishers to worry about.

This is a huge break in trust from a publisher stand point and a definite way on Digg’s end to game some more traffic out of people.

Off to Reddit we go.

Welcome to reddit. Drink the kool-aid, it’s safe.

  2. What else do you expect when you use DIGG to create shortened URLs you found on DIGG?

They can do what they want with their service. The easiest way to avoid this trap: don’t use DIGG to shorten your URLs.

There are countless other FREE services that will do this without the redirect.

    It’s not a huge deal.
