Google Docs and Chrome OS Is Not Good Enough

By Holden Page on July 10, 2009

As we all know, the Chrome OS will be targeted at netbooks, focus will be on web applications and it has been declared a direct hit at Microsoft. Whatever.

After my initial orgasm over the Chrome OS I had to hit reality at some point and I am hitting it now. Web applications will not and are rarely powerful enough to replace desktop applications. A perfect example of this is web based Office Suite Google Docs.

As my fellow blogger Alex put it, “It is a feature rich notepad.” and that is true.

Tell me how many times you have been able to write a college style paper (MCA, APA…) in Google Docs? If you have attempted like I, Then you know it sucks. Sure, you can create stylesheets but people already think word processors are too complicated as is and I don’t feel like taking the time to write code… to write a paper. The same issues apply to Spreadsheets, presentations and what have you. Web apps are still not powerful enough to replace desktop applications and there is no way you can deny that. You might argue that netbooks aren’t meant for powerful applications but people (consumers) expect that anyways.

Google Chrome OS is awesome and very needed but by the time the OS releases will web apps be closer to the power of desktop applications? Or will we be stuck behind the true applications of the world?

  1. Perhaps Google wants just that… to spur on Web Apps developers to improve their product by putting the spotlight on them with the perfect opportunity to show their products off.

  2. I think you may be write to some extent vis-a-vis Google Docs vs MS Word.

BUT…. We build a tool for the creation of custom database applications called Alpha Five. It lets you create web and desktop applications. Until about 2 years I would have violently agreed with you in the sense that web apps lacked the speed, smoothness and richness of desktop applications. HOWEVER, we have been working on tools for creating AJAX web applications quickly and were shocked as to how fast and how desktop like web database applications can be.

So where does that leave us concluding. At least for multi user database applications (registration systems for hotels/schools, ecommerce, order entry systems, crm, inventory control systems, work flow systems, HR systems, medical information systems etc,) you can now have all the benefits of the web without losing the speed, flexibility, interactivity and richness of the desktop. Since we came to that conclusion our Professional Services group has switched to building ALL apps as web apps.
