There was a rumor a few weeks back that Apple’s next iPods would have cameras. Well, it looks like at least for the iPod Touch, this has come to pass. According to a source close to Apple, the next iTouch will feature not only a camera, but an internal microphone.
I’m more excited about the latter than the former since it will allow for VoIP calls to be made wherever one can find a wireless network. And since it’s the iPod Touch we’re talking about, that means users will have phone-like functionality without actually needing to pay AT&T some egregious amount for a service plan. Of course, you lose out of the various benefits of a real phone, such internet anywhere and a number where people can actually reach you when you’re not on your Skype account.
Still, in many ways, the camera is going to be what grabs consumers. I suspect that the new iPod Touch will feature the same 3.2 megapixel camera that’s on the iPhone 3GS. Keeping in mind that the 3GS can also take video, I think it’s safe to assume that a lot of people will be prepared to user the new iPod Touch as their sole digital camera. This is just another factor that will tip a lot of consumers paying Apple for a shiny new gadget.
