New Opening For Linux In China – Green Dam

By Alex Wilhelm on July 3, 2009

One advantage to being the market share underdog, is that when the big bad communist government tries to block how most people use the internet, you might be spared the sword in the head. This is happening now, there is no Green Dam version for the Mac or Linux platforms right now. IDG says it well:

A service representative at a sister company to Green Dam’s main developer, Jinhui Computer System Engineering, said the company is testing the software on non-Windows platforms and will release an updated version if compatibility is added for other OSes.

Can we back up some? To begin with, I have never seen market share data for Mac or Linux use in China. I have a sneaking suspicion that Cupertino might have a problem with this, given the general “do it my way” of the company. Recall how far they bent of ATT about the iPhone. Do you think that they will let China tell them how to run their company? Like hell. Even more so, can you image the Linux community putting up with this?

Like hell. The Linux community in all seriousness should take this to war. Start promoting Linux as the “green dam free” OS. Controlling the Linux community is about as possible as organizing atheists. Whatever the future, Windows is getting it in the shorts, and other people should take the opportunity to advance their platforms.
