Techmeme – Time To Re-think Discussions

By Holden Page on July 9, 2009

Techgeist was the third blog to cover the Chrome OS right behind Mashable and the New York Times. If you looked at this you would’ve never known that, much less make sense who you should read. This has happened a few times over the past few weeks, maybe it is time that Techmeme starts re-thinking how discussion works and I have a suggestion.

Authority Based Discussion

There are some people’s opinions that are simply worth more in their weight than others, whether you like it or not. When such heated topics come up like the Chrome OS, sifting through the dirt to get to the gold is not an efficient way to get news and it makes sense that the blog giants such as Mashable and Techcrunch should be the first in discussion.

Now don’t get all ticked off with me and say that hurts the little dudes, because you are right! It does. You don’t think I realize that this could potentially hurt us at Techgeist too? But the fact of the matter is some people are currently more important than others, whether you like it or not. By adding authority to discussion we could weed out all the opinions that matter, but not as much, and get to the juicy details from the big dudes. There is a reason why these blogs have risen to the top, because they do tech blogging at this current moment, the best.

  1. The story was actually broken by Ars Technica due to some anonymous tips. I wrote about it at that point and then 2 hours later Google posted it to their blog. It does suck how sometimes smaller sites get ignored even though they are first to the punch.
