Yahoo! Is Getting Powered By The Falls

By Holden Page on July 6, 2009

We all know that Google and Yahoo consume A LOT of power. Getting fast results comes at a price, mainly environmental. In an attempt to cut down on using fossil fuels to power server farms for all of us lovely internet searchers, Yahoo is going to power there servers by the big N otherwise known as Niagra Falls.

About 90 percent of the electricity needed to power the servers will be powered by Niagra. One of the biggest consumers of energy is keeping the servers cool, good thing that these servers will be one hundred percent air cooled. You gotta give Yahoo! credit, that is pretty damn good. Yahoo! also plans to decrease carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2014 by using even more renewable energy resources.

It must be a green day for me but I think this is an awesome initiative by Yahoo! to be environmentally friendly. It will be interesting to see how fast and when this will be done. Let’s hope Yahoo! stays true to their goals, though I must say, 2014 is a long time coming. I am not sure they will even be around that long.
