Youtube Says Farewell to Internet Explorer

By Holden Page on July 14, 2009

Internet Explorer 6 has been a pain in everyone’s side. Standards, you say? What are these standards? Everyone hates IE 6 and that is including the people who actually use it. So who still uses Internet Explorer 6?

1. Company Employees Trying To Make The Day Go By Faster At Work

2. The People Too Lazy To Update There Computers via Windows Update

Well, Youtube says no longer, and has released a warning for IE 6 users telling them to update or eventually your favorite Boyce Avenue video will no longer play. The alternative browsers? Google Chrome (conveniently shown first), Internet Explorer 7 8 and Firefox 3.5 with no love for Safari or Opera.

This makes sense on Youtube’s part, making Youtube compatible with IE 6 is like scraping your nails across a board, absolutely horrendous. It also wastes a lot of time and in Youtube’s case, money. We here at Techgeist didn’t even bother to make the site compatible with IE 6 to begin with.

This does suck for the people with company laptops, in most cases they have no option to use an alternative browser because of various restrictions. I suppose you could argue that they shouldn’t be on Youtube anyways so who cares.

On a positive note, the death of IE 6 is coming and any web developer (of any caliber) should be jumping for joy. I sure as hell am.

  1. In the screenshot, it’s actually recommending IE8 rather than IE7 as your article says. :)

It’s interesting that your screenshot shows the browsers in this order: Chrome, IE8, Firefox 3.5. I just checked out YouTube in my virtualized copy of IE6, and it’s showing IE8 first. I wonder if the order is somehow randomized.

I will be extremely curious to see what kind of an impact this action will have once YouTube actually does drop support for IE6.

  2. Finally! Youtube’s been making me happy this week. Killing IE6 support is something sites need to do if they don’t want to waste development resources on making things compatible with old standards, and it takes a real juggernaut like Youtube to expedite that process.
