This news makes me happy because I just knew it. Om Malik of GigaOM did a story today about how the App Store sells around $2.4 billion worth of applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch each year. You know how Apple gets a 30% cut of everything sold in the App Store? Well, 30% of $2.4 billion is $720 million. And that’s not a number to scoff at. Doing some further math, Apple has an annual revenue of $38.42 billion. That means around 2.2% of Apple’s revenue comes from the App Store. Meaning that yes, Apple does in fact make quite a large sum of money from the App Store. It may not be as important as the Mac, but it’s still money in the bank.
