I’m Never Buying A Song From iTunes Again

By Michael Klurfeld on August 22, 2009

itunes evil

I saw this today when I was trying to put some They Might Be Giants songs I bought on iTunes a while back on my iPhone, and I am officially done. I’m not going to spite iTunes by spiting myself, so I will keep using my Apple stuff. I’m just never buying a single song from iTunes ever again. I don’t care that they’ve gone DRM-free. That doesn’t make up for the songs I have that are just busted. Sure, the hardcore Apple fanboys might argue that it’s my fault for not deauthorizing computers or what-not, but I think that’s a heaping load of bullshit. That’s the same recording industry argument that all media should stop working over time – if I buy a book, should the ink on the pages eventually disappear?

You know what happens to authorized machines? They get reformatted and break over time. Yet the people who sell is software and digital media expect that when we need to reinstall Windows on our only computer so that we can get work done and meet deadlines, we’re thinking “oh, of course I have to go through EVERY PROGRAM I HAVE INSTALLED AND DEAUTHORIZE IT.” Screw that.

  1. Welcome into the light, Michael. Personally, I’ve never bought a song for myself through iTunes. I’ve bought a handful for my wife, and my kids have bought a few, but I refuse to buy them. There are too many other alternatives that don’t give you the same hassles you find with iTunes.

Of course, at least iTunes lets you authorize up to five computers. Adobe won’t let you install their products on any other computers until you’ve “deauthorized” the others (so, you’re pretty much SOL if any of your computers with Adobe products ever break or die). Uninstalling isn’t enough, you have to deauthorize first.

  2. There is a way to deauthorize all computers on your account. You don’t have to own the old ones. You can then re-add the ones you still own. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

I understand your larger point about this not being acceptable ever if Apple did later change their strategy, but at least this way you can use the old songs you own.

  3. I’ve warned you didn’t I? You just didn’t listen to me. They also don’t take into account let’s say…. computer melting trojans for instance, and with the sound quality running at 128 kbps, I’m still okay with buying physical copies and ripping them myself.
