Some sources at Motorola are claiming that the company is planning to go the HTC Hero route with their Android handsets. Instead of offering the vanilla Android UI a la the G1 and the MyTouch, Motorola is planning an interface which is apparently going to be called Blur. Comparisons were drawn between Blur and Palm’s WebOS in how Blur UI will pull new data from social networks and the like in real time. I suspect that this real-time data dumping will be feature one can turn off, as it seems like it would wreck havoc on a handset’s battery life.
The fact that companies can make there own UIs for Android sort of highlights the beauty of the platform. Google hands out the framework for a working OS, including an interface should a handset maker want to use it. If the handset maker wants to try and innovate, they are completely free to do so. In this way, Android remains the silent victor – Motorola and HTC may try to beat each other in trying to make the best interface, but at the end of the day, they’re all still helping Android build its market share.
