Well, no Apple Tablet was announced at Apple’s big event this past Wednesday, which lead to a whole mess about whether or not some sort of Apple, e-reader-y device is even in the works. David Pogue interviewed Steve Jobs, and Jobs said some stuff about how he thinks “general-purpose devices will win the day.” Pogue and a whole bunch of people took this to mean that Apple would not be working on anything that’s an e-reader. Then MG Siegler from TechCrunch pointed out that none of that precludes a tablet which will also act as an e-reader.
Well, Duh!
At this point, we all know that an Apple tablet is coming at some point. It seems like it won’t be for this year, but next year isn’t out of the question. And if it’s a big-screen device, why not make it an e-reader? Hell, Jobs basically said he wants Apple to be a digital book retailer: “If I were Amazon, I’d love selling stuff where I didn’t have to have a warehouse, didn’t need UPS.”
And this is standard Apple behavior. Whenever they enter a market, Apple makes a device which does more than anything else out there. That’s been true since the Apple II, and it was true with the iPhone. The Apple Tablet will be an e-reader, but you can bet the family farm that it’ll do a whole lot more. Now I’m going to wash the taste of Apple fanboyism out of my mouth.
