Well, shit. The iPhone OS 3.1 update breaks the tethering trick that was present in earlier versions of the iPhone 3.0 firmware. This is awful because tethering was sick: you could be stranded in an airport, and all you had to avoid paying a million dollars to Boingo or some other awful “hotspot” company was to plug in your iPhone. And bam! But we have confirmed it.
What’s really annoying is that iPhone 3.1 won’t even have a tethering feature through AT&T. Though I’m not sure if I really care. iPhone customers pay $30 a month for their data plans. Yet chances are that AT&T will require an lot of extra cash just to pull down internet over a laptop. The worst part is that they’ll still probably find a way to sucker me into paying for it.
