CONFIRMED: iPhone 3.1 Update Removes Tethering Trick

By Michael Klurfeld on September 9, 2009

Well, shit. The iPhone OS 3.1 update breaks the tethering trick that was present in earlier versions of the iPhone 3.0 firmware. This is awful because tethering was sick: you could be stranded in an airport, and all you had to avoid paying a million dollars to Boingo or some other awful “hotspot” company was to plug in your iPhone. And bam! But we have confirmed it.

What’s really annoying is that iPhone 3.1 won’t even have a tethering feature through AT&T. Though I’m not sure if I really care. iPhone customers pay $30 a month for their data plans. Yet chances are that AT&T will require an lot of extra cash just to pull down internet over a laptop. The worst part is that they’ll still probably find a way to sucker me into paying for it.

  1. Any word on getting it working again with a little jailbreaking action?

  2. Sounds one of your staff is down a tetherable iPhone. At least your sacrifice did some good.

  3. This is shit! I need that ability but AT&T is like the government, see a good thing and find a way to piss someone off by charging more for somthing they should get free!!!

    • Are you talking about the previous administration type government or the current one? If you’re talking about the Bush Administration then YES they are kinda like that. I agree Tethering should be free since we’re already paying for the data plan which is a lot more than the AT&T internet I have at home.

    • Apple / AT&T control the iPhone WAY TOO MUCH. They should only charge $.01 since the users don’t get ANY FREEDOM of use.

    • Hey Fred, stop being an idiot. This is a tech site. But I do remind you that it wasn’t the Bush administration that surrounded itself with communists, socialists and domestic terrorists, as well as trying to tax the hell out of the people. I don’t recall Bush ever crying about being criticized like your current bozo president. Stop drinking the kool-aid and get your facts right.

    • Amen John. One both counts.

    • Amen John. On both counts.

  4. so, who is bothered with the update then? a phone is a phone. :)

  5. I had os 3.0, added the tethering profile.

I upgraded to os 3.0.1, tethering profile still present and worked.

Today, I updated to 3.1, and the profile is still active! I can enable/disable my tethering ability just as before.

I dont know why yours aint working!

  6. @JaredK the profile still exists but you will not find Tethering under your Network Settings.

It DOES NOT work in 3.1.

  7. Tethering still up and running on my phone. Don’t know why its working for some but not others. I did not sync and I did not have the tethering enabled when I downloaded the update. Hopefully that will help someone find a reason here.

    Cheers.

  8. I have several iPhones.. I tested with 3G upgraded to 3.1 and although I could download a mobileconfig, the tethering was not there…

I am keeping my 3GS on 3.01 – no reason to upgrade really, not enough of a reason to give up tethering…

if someone finds a pattern, let me know :)

  9. If you upgraded to3.1 with tethering disabled you are fine until you plug in to any computer with itunes 9. As soon as the iPhone is added to the devices list, you are screwed. No more tethering

  10. So, If I upgrade using my desktop, but remove itunes from laptop, it should still work? I only want to tether to laptop anyway!

  11. I believe Itunes 9 is the reason. As soon you sync your iphone with Itunes 9 it blows the hack.

  12. Thanks, I need the tether so I’ll keep 3.01 till more info comes in…Funny my AT&T Blackjack had an internal file that enabled tethering and my whole company used it. Other AT&T phone tether without extra charge, WTF with iPhone?

  13. My setup:
    iTunes 9 on Win7 64bit
iPhone on 3.0.1 not yet updated to 3.1
    Tethering is still working.

  14. same here, but we are talking about tethering on 3.1 not 3.01, that works great

  15. well crap, based on several posts, I upgraded and tehter disappeaared. Now I’m screwed until someone figures it out.

  16. I synced my 3.01 with itunes 9 and tether still works so I’m pretty sure it’s the iphone update that brings it. I’m not upgrading until I know tether works. Why Apple continues to let ATT ruin the iphone is beyond me!

  17. Its because we live in an OLIGARHY!

  18. Great, just what I needed, AFTER installing the update!

  19. I refuse to update to 3.1! Tethering to my MacBook is very cool.

  20. I am really thankful I didn’t update. I love my tethering. According to Benm at, they are working on another hack to enable tethering. Hopefully they will come thru.

  21. i upgraded to 3.1, but want to get back to 3.01 b/c i need the tethering – any ideas?

  22. Still see that some think this is att pushing apple, it is apple. Att is one of 100s of global carries apple uses. This is a global apple decision. Put the blame where it is due. This is not the first time apple retroactively took away a feature that 1) owners were happily using and 2) did not put the phone integrity at risk (aka greed over caring about customers).

  23. Don’t worry, I’m sure the jailbreak is just around the corner ^^

  24. http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

Not worth giving up tethering. I’ll pass yo! :D D

  25. #Tether #iPhone #3.1 with #AT&T, Use #Cydia’s Tether.app, need #Jailbroken 3.1 and Mac to tether, Other apps require carrier file

IF YOU ALREADY UPGRADED TO 3.1, and you want to still tether, THERE IS A WAY…

TETHER YOUR iPHONE 3G (S) 3.1 using cydia app called “Tether”, you need a jailbroken iPhone 3.1 and a Mac computer that you will be tethering to…

I was about to downgrade to 3.0.1 when i lost tethering… but the app is simple enough and as long as you have a mac, you can TETHER iPhone 3.1!!!

other apps like “MyWiFi” that use the carrier hack will not work, the WiFi generated connection will, but the tethering itself is broken…

BUT “Tether” app works from cydia on 3.1

Hope this can save a bunch of people headaches from downgrading

  26. @steved – No, it is not Apple taking the feature away. It is purely up to the carrier to allow tethering. In the US, ATT is to blame for this, just as they were to blame for not allowing MMS messages on 3.0. This is not an Apple decision.

  27. When will Apple realise that there is a world outside ATT and the US, why do we accept this crap.

Nokia allows any of their handsets to tether with a Mac, it cares about what it’s customers want.

I am going back to Nokia, Apple needs to understand that it’s their customers who keep them in business and not ATT !!!!

  28. HEY-ANYONE HAVE THE SITE TO TRY TO TETHER AN IPHONE 3GS TO MY L.T.??

  29. WHAT THE HELL!!?? 3.1 and POOF!! Tether is gone…SHIT!!!!!!!!!!
Any help here? On windows and CAN’T do a retrograde “undate”…. :-(
