Corporate Fail: Sprint CEO Says a Pre-iPhone Comparison “Is Like Comparing Someone to Michael Jordan”

By Michael Klurfeld on September 12, 2009

sprint ceo FAILTalk about dumb. Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, said in an interview with Charlie Rose that comparing the Pre to the iPhone is wrong. You know why? Because “…it’s like comparing someone to Michael Jordan.”

As Gizmodo points out, no, it’s more like comparing another basketball player to Michael Jordan. After all, the Palm Pre is a smartphone, just like the iPhone. To run with this basketball analogy, it’s like having the coach of a team about to play against the Chicago Bulls of the late 90s say to his team “Go out there and try, but when you get decimated, it’ll be ok.”

On a more serious note, this is not something the CEO of a company should say. I will not be surprised if the Sprint stock price takes a hit for what is really a very careless thing to have said. This is even worse than when that Nokia VP said that carriers might pass up the new Maemo handset line.
