Hey, Early Adopters, It Is Your JOB to Get Screwed Over

By Holden Page on September 3, 2009

I like to consider myself an early adopter of web technologies, keyword “like” to. More often than not though, I tend to just watch the older blog folk get bashed around a bit while the latest and greatest web products are still in super-duper uber-private beta (exaggerated.., a lil’ bit) then hop on the omfgthiswebappisgoingtochangethewaywecrap when the bumps are smoothed out, or if you’re a Twitter user, just started looking at the bumps as just another feature. Occasionally these web applications grow into something more, they actually well… grow, unlike most web start-ups, and soon enough the early adopters that helped shape (and hyped) the service into what it is for the ever-growing mainstream audience get kicked to the curb.

And what do the early adopters do?

Well, they usually complain and start bashing the service like the world has come to an end and because they weren’t rewarded for their hard work. Newsflash early adopters, you are “da bitches” of newly released web apps, and as such it is your job to be “screwed” over (horrendous analogy, I know). So get over it.

Now unlike you early adopters who enjoy complaining about your self-proclaimed job, I will not continue complaining. Move along now, nothing to see here.

  1. I think, though, that you’re missing the bigger picture. It’s not just early adopters of Web applications that get screwed over; it’s early adopters of any technology.

Think about it. The early adopters (read: anyone who bought the first gen) of the iPhone got screwed over when the iPhone 3G came out. The people that bought the iPhone 3G got screwed over when the 3GS came out.

Those who bought the Xbox 360 early got completely screwed over (RROD anyone?). People that attempted to adopt HD-DVD got really screwed (worse than those that adopted LaserDiscs back in the late 70s and 80s).

It’s the curse of being involved with technology in its infancy.
