ToyBots – Connected Toys Of Some Sort #TC50

By Alex Wilhelm on September 14, 2009

Take Webkins, interactive toys, GPS, full 3g, and finally mix it with an iPhone ( tossed in for good measure) and you have ToyBots. I really have no idea how they are going to explain this to the judges, but we’re watching. They want the apply this ”magic network”  to all toys. Their first demonstration was making a toy wake you up in the morning. You can attach messages to toys, and record messages, send them to the toy, which will then read to me.

What the hell?

If these toys are for children, I doubt that they are going to be able to figure this concept out. There are far, far, far, far to many contingencies to work with, followed by poor toy sound quality. You can also retool your toy digitally to have a difference personality. I have a teddy bear, do I need to refresh the toys personality every other day? Am I that shallow?

I’m not a kid anymore, in fact I am beginning to feel a bit old, but still, a plush dinosaur doll does not need to feel like its evolving. Also, do I really want to run my toy through an online game with my toy as a game controller? My god, what is the world coming to. This might work, if they make it simpler, but for now, I am giving a “no thanks” stamp and a fifth of vodka to pass the time until version 2.

They are launching with a wireless provider eventually. The open idea of toys online with a network and some apps is just a bit more than me.
