Kaipola, Finland. 1986. - 20C. Harald Demuth ascends to a platform 61 meters above the ground, looks around, and finds a huge forest covered with snow and ice, and a platform with an inclination of 37.5 degrees, a slope of 80%. According recognize in an interview years later (see interview in German) was impossible to contain the nerves. After this preliminary look, Harald would face climb this ski jumping trampoline on a red Audi 100 CS quattro with 136 hp. That feat would be recorded on video and ads would carry one of the most famous cars in history. Acrobatics not without risk or technical complexities, and that this was a challenge even for the best off-road time. Were there any trick? How they were prepared for that feat?
The complexity of the challenge was greater than what you can imagine. Harald not only had to climb once that platform. Altogether he would have to repeat the maneuver up to 13 times. Those images had to be perfectly portrayed, cameras would be used in the car, a camera mounted on top, at the base, and there would also be some shots from a helicopter. The car before the test had to be raised by crane to the platform where skiers jump occurs.
Harald had a mechanic rally his former team, after proposing a lot of ideas designed three different security systems. On the one hand, the Audi 100 was connected to a safety line to prevent dropped back into if things got ugly, and to lower the vehicle and repeat each scene. Also it had a system, similar to a huge fork, that would nail on snow and ice to actuate the brake. Finally, there was a system to launch the car and the speed to win the ski jump meet. But the latter was not necessary. And the Audi 100 get up the track on his own.
The recording equipment had to face during four days at temperatures to -20 ° C, and a maximum of between three and four hours of light. The test had to be carefully planned and the Audi 100 CS quattro red employee obviously studded tires would have to adhere to the icy surface. And, beyond the immense slope that would save, Pitkavuori track that was still an ice rink.
Finally, that announcement would become one of the best known, not only Audi but the entire automotive history. Even he come to receive an award at Cannes.
In 2005, 19 years after the legendary ad, on the occasion of the 25 anniversary of the birth of the Audi Ur-Quattro, and the famous drive system that would reach the legend in racing and street, Audi set out to repeat the feat. In that case, an Audi A6 had chosen Color Atlas 4.2 quattro Gray.
Harald recognize that at the time was one of the pilots proposed for the challenge, but unfortunately a broken wrist in a minor accident on leaving the hotel in Finland would make was ruled out at the last moment. Finally, Uwe Bleck got up again in an Audi A6, Pitkavuori on a track that had to be revamped for the occasion, after 11 years of inactivity. In that occasion, Audi ordered a team of 40 people, and the preparatory work had to start three weeks earlier. A time that does not seem exaggerated when you consider that even some of the panels of the ramp had to be replaced by their poor condition.
Audi A6 that with tiptronic and completely series also included various security systems, including a kind of anchor 65 kilograms to be deployed under the car if it lost control. Finally, the Audi A6 managed to climb back Pitkavuori track, at first, at 4,200 rpm, and about 60 km / h, up to 47 meters high that had placed their particular goal. Uwe had to complete the process a total of eleven times.
That feat is still in the memory of Audi, to the extent that it remains a recurring in modern ads, like this 2013 reason.
